In the five phases of elections held so far in Uttar Pradesh, every trend seems to suggest that after a long gap of 22 years the disenchanted and exploited people of Uttar Pradesh will provide the Congress Party with an opportunity to form a progressive, sensitive and honest government in the state. But the opposition parties seem to be perturbed by the massive popular support being received by the Congress party. Today, when the people of Uttar Pradesh are voting to regain their self respect and on basic issues like employment and development, the BJP is trying to use every trick in the book to push their communal and primitive agenda through.
It is saddening that a party like the Samajwadi Party which claims to have secular credentials has struck this devious and unholy alliance with the Bharatiya Janta Party. It is in furtherance of this alliance that the Bharatiya Janta Party’s Varun Gandhi has become the spokesperson and well wisher of the Samajwadi Party- this is the same Varun Gandhi who is facing the music for his hate-filled, venom spewing speech where he promised to chop of the hands and legs of people belonging to the minority sections. Even though 128 seats ( i.e. more than 1/4th of the total seats in Uttar Pradesh) are yet to go to the polls, in Varun Gandhi’s analysis which seems to be sponsored and motivated by this understanding between the SP and the BJP, the Samajwadi Party would emerge as the single largest party. What is surprising and supremely ironical is that Varun Gandhi does not choose to repose the same confidence in his own party – the BJP as he does for the SP in terms of final tally of seats in the ongoing elections. Thereafter, there is an immediate statement by Akhilesh Yadav from the Samajwadi Party. Now any reasonable person would be able to see through this pre –planned series of events that the BJP and the SP are in cohorts with each other- one party having communal tendencies and the other casteist- with their common objective of trying (in vain) to halt the revival of the Congress Party and in effect the revival of the Aam Admi of Uttar Pradesh. Both would benefit by splitting the “secular vote” or by orchestrating some religious/communal strife by which the Hindu vote would consolidate towards the BJP and the Muslim vote towards the SP. And thereby the BJP and SP would achieve that the Uttar Pradesh is once again delivered to into the hands of anti-social and communal elements with a primitive, anti-development agenda. It was only in furtherance of this devious strategy that the BJP in cohorts with the BSP controlled state administrative machinery and the SP’s anti-social element tried to create strife between the Shias and Sunnis of Lucknow but they did not succeed in doing so.
On the one hand is BJP’s dramatics- they promise to fight against the criminalization of UP but have absolutely no qualms in doing business with the SP- a party notorious for its support to criminals. On the other hand we have the rank political opportunism of the SP which has been more than eager to participate in this “match fixing” of the worst kind. History stands testament and so do the secular populace of Uttar Pradesh that the perennial opportunist in Mulayam Singh Yadav saw absolutely no qualms in embracing one of the worst villains of the Babri Masjid Demolition- Kalyan Singh. Not only was he given a red carpet welcome but every wish of his was fully acceded to by the opportunistic Mulayam Singh Yadav. If you pay closer attention you shall also find that Mulayam Singh Yadav has always dithered from criticizing the Rashtirya Swayamsevak Sangh despite them openly branding minorities as “anti-nationals”.
Today when it is amply clear that the Congress party will emerge in a position to form the state government in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party cannot swallow this bitter eventuality. Hence, they have formed this alliance with the BJP by which they intend to put all issues of development on the back burner and reignite communal strife.
The Congress party appeals to the voters of Uttar Pradesh and makes a fervent request to the Minorities of UP that they must all unite to defeat the unholy intentions of the SP and the BJP and must vote for the Congress party. It is the Congress party and the Congress party alone that can make the BJP bite dust. Those who have compromised on their so-called secular credentials and are hand in glove with the BJP can do little to stall the resurgence of the communal elements. It is with this hope that we once again appeal to the people of Uttar Pradesh that they reject the parties with a communal outlook and vote for a secular, clean and corruption-free government that only the Congress Party is in a position to provide in UP.
