Shri Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that people should not depend on promises but should see the work done by a political party.   “We do not make promises, we deliver. The UP elections are here and for the past 22 years, your leaders have come and made promises but have not changed anything here. The Congress party has done whatever it said it would do and whatever we have done is for every Indian — not for any one caste or religion,” he said.   Addressing a public meeting in Unnao, Shri Gandhi asked the women in the audience, who had come in large numbers to  if anyone had come to listen to their woes in the past 22 years.   “I came to you and you told us that you do not get enough to eat. We are now bringing a food security bill for you, which will ensure that you get enough to eat,’ he said.   He said that the Centre had sent food grains earlier but Mulayam Singh Yadav took it away and the biggest food grain scam took place in his regime. “In 2004, you voted for us because we delivered according to your expectations. You have knowledge and you have strength and you are the ones who run this state. I have not come here to make false promises. If you want to hear false promises, please go to Mulayam Singh or Mayawati,” he said.   Shri Gandhi said that Mulayam Singh Yadav was promising free electricity but the people in Amethi showed me that they get only bills and no electricity. From where will he give free electricity?

Waving a piece of paper in his hand, Shri Gandhi said that Mulayam Singh had a magic wand which he will wave after becoming chief minister and the skies will open up. “From the skies, wires will come down into every home and you will get electricity,” he said and added that Mulayam Singh was promising the moon to the voters in elections.   Shri Gandhi further said that the Congress had given MNREGA, weavers’ package, Bundelkhand package to UP. “It is another thing that none of it reached you because the elephant gobbled it all up. We gave Rs 60,000 crore for farmers’ loan waiver , we gave reservation to Muslims and now we are giving food security bill which will give 35 kgs of food rain to every [poor family every month,” he said.   Shri Gandhi asked the people if they had seen Mulayam Singh Yadav or Mayawati in any village during the past five years. “I go to Bundelkhand but I have never seen them there. In 2007, you chased away Mulayam Singh and threw away his cycle and brought in the elephant. And now the magic elephant in Lucknow has eaten away all your money,” he said.   Referring to NDA’s India Shining slogan, Shri Gandhi said that half of the country did not understand this slogan. He said women and children are going without food, schools have no teachers. Which India is the BJP talking about?   He said that he had not come with promises but had come to change Uttar Pradesh. He said he would not move out of Uttar Pradesh unless the state started to change.   He informed the people that money for the Sharda canal had been sanctioned but added that the money would not reach the people because of the magical elephant. “I have done my work and you do yours.  Vote for the Congress and take your canal,” he said.
