A Change is about to take place in Uttar Pradesh: Rahul Gandhi

Posted on 13 February 2012 by admin

Shri Rahul Gandhi has said that Uttar Pradesh needs change and a change is about to take place in this state.   He asked women and the youth to go to polling stations and cast their vote in favor of the Congress because UP had suffered enough for 22 years.   Addressing a series of meetings on Monday, the Congress leader said that he had not come to make promises but had come to bring a change. “I do not have the time to make promises because promises will not make a difference. You can make me work as much as you want to, you can make me fight for development and I will do it for you,” he said.

When informed about the havoc that the Bakulai river wreaks in Pratapgarh district and the absence of a bridge brings problems for the local people, Shri Gandhi said, “What have your government done in the past 22 years? Why have they not given you a bridge?  This river does not flow straight and neither have these governments worked straight.  In these elections, think what your governments have done for you and then cast you vote.”   Shri Gandhi further said that since 2004, the government at the centre is a government for the common man. We have given schemes like MNREGA, loan waiver scheme for farmers, weavers’ package, national highways and JNRUM. We do not have a Congress government in UP and yet we have given so much here.
He said that when he went to villages , the women told him that there were no employment opportunities so we brought MNREGA. For this scheme, we gave thousands of crores of rupees but Mayawati said it was useless.   “MNREGA had been launched during the Mulayam Singh government but he chose to give unemployment allowance instead of employment. You told us that you did not get a square meal every day and now we are bringing the food security bill under which you will get 35 kgs of food grain every month. No one will sleep on a hungry stomach now,” he said.

Talking about corruption, Shri Gandhi said that the centre will send money, will send food but the question is whether this will reach you. In Haryana, Assam, Maharashtra, this reaches the people but in UP it all gets stolen because the magic elephant in Lucknow eat it all up.   Shri Gandhi said that now that elections are here, Mulayam Singh is making promises. He says he will turn Bundelkhand into Israel. When Bundelkhand suffered drought, he did not go there. Now he is promising free electricity– from where will he give free electricity? He was chief minister thrice– why did he not give it then? In his regime, the bill used to arrive, not the electricity.   Shri Gandhi said that until the people of Uttar Pradesh learn to stand up for their rights, he will continue to come to them. He asked the youth to change their mindset and change their state. He said that a beginning has been made and a high voting percentage indicated that this was vote for change.
