People change Governments, Not political Parties : Rahul

Posted on 02 February 2012 by admin

Congress General Secretary Shri Rahul Gandhi today said it is the common man who brings about a change in Government, not political parties. Shri Gandhi was addressing a joint rally with Shri Ajit Singh at Meerut.   Earlier Addressing meetings in Ambedkar Nagar on Thursday, Shri Gandhi said, “Mulayam Singh has said that he will give 18 per cent reservation to Muslims but that is not possible due to the Supreme Court ceiling. Still, he is making promises because elections are here and you can ask him fro the moon and he will agree.
Shri Gandhi said that during the Mulayam Singh regime, centre had set food grains under the public distribution system but it did not reach the poor and his party leaders looted it all. And now he says he will change Uttar Pradesh.   Shri Gandhi then said that Mayawati was also living under the illusion that in her regime UP is shining.   Recalling the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he said that other parties made 20-25 promises and forgot about hem after the polls but eh Congress had made only one promise– that the Congress government will be a government of the common man and we have fulfilled out promise.   “I am telling you this story because the leaders here do not reach out to the people and do not talk to them. They deliver long speeches and then forget about it. The Congress launched MNREGA so that people get employment in their villages. For this we did not have to watch television. We simply spoke to you, understood your needs and acted accordingly,” he said.   Shri Gandhi further said that when we spoke to farmers they told us that the banks were shutting doors on them because they could not pay back debts. He said that the Congress decided to open the banks’ doors for you by bringing in the loan waiver scheme.
He said the when they bring schemes and programmes for the poor, the opposition terms it a ‘nautanki’ and says that it will not benefit anyone. “You work hard and bring progress in the country and this is your money which we bring back to you,” he said.

A woman stood up and said that no one was ready to hear her out. Shri Gandhi said, “If no one listens to you, I will listen to you. This is my fault, I should come to you more often. If I have come here 20-25 times, I should have come here 100 times.”   He said that, at least, he came to the people but Mayawati never ventured out of her high-walled house. She believes whatever her people tell her and now thinks that everything in fine here and UP is shining.   Shri Gandhi further said that the Congress had given weavers’ package which included loan up to Rs two lakhs, subsidy on thread and weavers credit card. This was done to solve their problems and simplify their lives.   He said that he was here to change Uttar Pradesh and he could not do it alone He asked the people to vote for congress and bring in a government that belongs to them and works for them.
