“It is woman power which can make the dream of World Unity come true and lead the world towards prosperity giving a new direction to humanity. Women residing in rural areas must come forward and acquire education and make valuable contribution to society. A well-educated lady can make the whole family filled with good human values and when the family is educated, the whole society develops. At the same time, it is also important to develop rural banking in order to improve the economic condition of the rural areas. This will reduce the gap between towns and villages and pave the way for global unity”. These thoughts were expressed by renowned social activist of Bangladesh, Ms. Nurjahan Begum, Deputy Managing Director, Grameen Bank of Bangladesh at a press conference organized by City Montessori School, CMS Kanpur Road Auditorium.
Ms Nurjahan Begum said that she was feeling elated seeing the wonderful, harmonious atmosphere of CMS. In fact, education itself was being redefined here. She praised the CMS Founder-Manager, Dr Jagdish Gandhi saying that Dr Gandhi had not only given a new direction to education in Lucknow but also in the whole world. It was a unique education that will safeguard and protect the future of generations to come. I am really grateful to him for having invited me to come here, she said. She was involved in starting the Grameen Bank Project with Prof. Mohammad Yunus in 1976 in Chittagong Dist of Bangladesh. Today, the Branches of this Bank have spread throughout the country and it is contributing to development of villages in a significant way. Through this Bank she has also inspired the rural women of Bangladesh to come out of the four walls of their houses and acquire education.
Ms Nurjahan Begum said that Bangladesh and India can do several projects together in which they can share their resources and ideas. The CMS Founder, renowned educationist Dr. Jagdish Gandhi welcomed Ms Nurjahan Begum in CMS saying that her invaluable contribution to society is an eye-opener for the younger generation. Like Bangladesh, India is also an agricultural country. The development of India lies in the development of her villages. No words of praise are sufficient for the work and achievements of Nurjahan Begum in the field of rural banking and education of women. She is a role model for women all over the world. Dr.Gandhi was confident that her tremendous work in rural and urban areas will benefit the generations to come and will prove to be a milestone in the development of Bangladesh.
